Eagles to Bench Mike Vick, Nick Foles to Remain Starter

Wasn’t it just a few days ago that Andy Reid said that Michael Vick was still the Eagles starter? Didn’t Reid say that if a decision was made we would hear it from him?

Well it looks like that day is today. I don’t blame Reid because he cannot salvage the season. Even if Vick gets back in and wins out, the Eagles will miss the playoffs. Here is what went down according to BSO:

According to ESPN, Reid now says that no matter if Vick is cleared to play or not, Nick Foles will remain the starting quarterback.

Vick won’t be happy about this, but it is for the best. He can get completely healthy and start sending out job applications to new teams ASAP.

Nothing is going to stop both Vick and Reid from being shipped out on the first thing smoking out of Philly. I pretty much guarantee that the Eagles will draft a quarterback with their first pick in the 2013 draft (Matt Barkley) unless Foles breaks out in a major way.  Then obviously they’d take Luke Joeckel.

It is hard to see it end like this. Things could have went different for this team if they didn’t do three things:

  1. Move to the “wide 9” defense and stock it with stat padders. Horrible.
  2. Splurge on every free agent during the uncapped free agency of 2011
  3. Fill the offensive line with journey men like King Dunlap and draft non factors like Danny Watkins.

The Eagles had a good thing going two seasons ago and simply needed to add quality depth, not shake up their entire team with the likes of Justin Babin, Nnamdi Asomugha, Vince Young, Cullen Jenkins, etc.

I wonder what is left of Mike Vick’s career. Maybe he ends up somewhere like San Francisco or Oakland to compete for a starting job.

Or maybe he just fades away into Bolivia with Mike Tyson…
